It's a great guide
I can't believe no one has reviewed this book. It is a great guide to fishing the Colorado River, plus many of the tributaries. And believe me, this is a lot of water to fish! Al does a great job giving the reader insight into the area waters and how to fish them. This book is a must for anyone wanting to visit and fish the Colorado and other rivers in and near the Middle Park area of Colorado, and downstream.

A Treasure Trove of Goodies!
What a wonderful resource this is! I ordered a copy on a whim, and found the author's writing style both informative and entertaining. There were so many shops and events that I've never visited, and I'm a Colorado native! I now have the book in my glove compartment, so my friends and I can visit a "pre-screened" fabulous restaurant, no matter what part of town we are visiting. I recommend this book to anyone who lives in Colorado, is relocating to Colorado, or visiting Colorado. I eagerly await her next book!

The Fossils of Florissant

Florissant fossils: A new glimpse into a lost world
This is a delightful book, well written and profusely illustrated, about one of the world's premier fossil insect and plant localities. It is written for the serious paleontologist, as well as the casual inquisitive reader interested in the natural world.

Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument is remarkable because it constitutes a highly detailed snapshot of life at a time when the earth was entering a period of major climate change. The setting is a 34 million year-old forest, along a lake teeming with exceptional diversity, in the shadow of an erupting volcano. Due to the outstanding quality of preservation, many unique fossil plants, birds, butterflies, spiders, bees, and fish from this site appear to have met their demise only yesterday.

During the last 100 years, a large number of prized fossils from Florissant have been scattered to museums all over the world. The author has traveled extensively to find and catalog these specimens, and assemble a collection of color photographs printed in exquisite detail. He meticulously reconstructs the ancient ecosystem from the fossil record, at times much like a detective unravels clues from a good murder mystery. Interesting twists abound. For example, why is the only fossil of the tsetse fly-the blood-sucking, disease-carrying scourge of equatorial Africa today-- found at this location high in the Rockies?

When it comes to fossils, big is not necessarily better. Dinosaur books have grabbed the imagination of many in the last few years, but The Fossils of Florissant, by Herbert Meyer, is a newcomer that deserves to be at the top of the heap.

History comes to life
The history of the Ute in southwest Colorado comes to life in Fragile Treaties. The author provides useful facts mingled in a captivating style to tell the story of the friendship between a wife of a Ute chief, and the wife of a calvary officer, and the conflict that threatens to destroy all they hold dear to them. Very impressive book. Well thought out, well researched, and well written.

Francisca and the Boys
Published in Hardcover by Vantage Press (May, 1900)
Authors: Alfred Arroyo and Alfred Arrroyo
Average review score:

Fantastic Francisca
Francisca and the Boys is the true essence of growing up in a hispanic family during the depression years of the 30's. This book sets you in real life, as if you were actually living with the characters. The Delmonte family is gently unwoven with love and support that gives the reader a true understanding of what "family" really is. Reading this book to the end is not enough, you'll want more of Nick, Davy, and Francisca......

A Great Help
This book is full of helpful information. It does have all of the legal forms in it, but even if you are using attorneys, it is a helpful tool for understanding the entire process, and to help ensure you get details taken care of that you may have otherwise missed. I read the book, my ex read the book, and I have unfortunately loaned it to several friends.

Great Colorad Guide
This is a well written guide book that is really easy to use. If you want to read all about Colorado before you go it has an easy style and entertaining commentary that makes it an enjoyable and informative read. If, on the other hand, you just want to look up some information about what there is to do or see in a place you have just arrived in, the index and easy to read headings make this a quick and easy guide to use. It also contains some very current information about the area and includes web addresses to look up for further details about specific attractions. Restaurant recommendations are good - I tried out a few! Like other Frommers guides it has a good pull-out colour map and useful small street plans in the book. All in all I would give this book a thumbs up.

The Geography of Hope: Poets of Colorado's Western Slope
Published in Paperback by Conundrum Pr (October, 2001)
Author: David J. Rothman
Average review score:

Something here for everyone
This poetry anthology by 12 Colorado writers is a real keeper. The backgrounds of the poets are as diverse as their poetry. Whatever your taste in poetry you are sure to find something that speaks to you. Humor, regret, nature, politicss, love, and a dash of magic are all represented in light and darkness. The diversity of the poetry is amazing considering the writers all reside on the common ground of the Western Slope of Colorado. Wallace Stegner, dean of writers of the West, wrote that "...no place is a place until it has had a poet..." If that is true, the Western Slope of Colorado is truly a place thanks to these poets. This collection, now in it's second edition, is a must have for anyone remotely interested in contemporary poetry of the first rank.
